Why does the fear go the moment you start?
Fear is not a property of the task. It is a property of prediction, and prediction ends where evidence begins.
One of the biggest misconceptions people hold is that fear is a property of the task. It is not. Fear is a property of prediction.
Your nervous system is not responding to reality. It is responding to what it believes reality is about to be.
Uncertainty is expensive
Before you begin something difficult, the brain is working with incomplete information, so it does what it is very good at: it simulates. It runs the outcomes it can imagine, and most of what it can imagine is unpleasant.
Every unknown in that list is uncertainty, and from an evolutionary standpoint uncertainty is expensive. Movement in the bushes did not wait for proof of a predator. The system that assumed the worst and was wrong survived more often than the one that waited to be sure. You inherited that operating system, and it does not know the difference between a predator and an unanswered message.
Then you begin, and the guessing stops
The moment you actually start, the brain receives real sensory information. It no longer has to guess.
Prediction gives way to perception. And perception is almost always less frightening than imagination, because imagination has no budget and no end. Reality is only ever one thing at a time.
Dopamine is about pursuit, not reward
Most people think of dopamine as the reward chemical. It is more useful to think of it as involved in motivation, pursuit, and learning. Before you start, it tends to be low, because the reward is distant and uncertain.
The instant you begin, even with something as small as opening the document, you produce a progress signal. The brain registers something simple and powerful.
I am moving toward the objective.
Not because you have succeeded. Because you are engaged. Which is why the report is so consistent: I felt terrible before starting, and five minutes later I was fine.
The network that narrates you
There is a set of regions often called the default mode network, and when you are putting something off it tends to be busy. It handles self-referential thinking: worrying, imagining the future, replaying the past, asking what this says about me.
That is a useful capacity. It is also, left running with nothing to do, a factory for anxiety. Once you are genuinely engaged in a demanding task, attention shifts toward what are sometimes called task-positive networks, and there are simply fewer resources left over for the narration.
You stop thinking about yourself. You start interacting with something outside yourself. The anxiety very often drops, and it drops without you having done anything about the anxiety.
What avoidance teaches
There is a principle in psychology usually called exposure learning, and it explains why avoidance is not neutral. Every time you avoid the frightening thing, the brain draws a conclusion: good thing we escaped. The fear is not merely preserved. It is confirmed.
And every time you approach it and nothing catastrophic happens, the model updates. Perhaps that was not as dangerous as predicted.
Notice what changed. Not your courage. Your prediction.
The waiting costs more than the work
Here is the part people find hardest to believe. The anticipatory phase is often more metabolically demanding than the task itself. Planning, simulating, weighing risks, rehearsing conversations that will never happen in that form: all of it consumes real resources.
Once you are working, the brain can become more efficient, not less, because it has stopped running dozens of futures at once. It is solving one concrete problem. That is a smaller job than the one it was doing while you sat still.
You can watch this almost anywhere. The athlete is nervous before the gun and busy after it. The speaker is worst backstage. Surgeons will tell you the anticipation is harder than the operation.
Do not wait to feel ready
One practical thing follows from all of this, and it is the opposite of what most people do. Do not make feeling ready the precondition for acting. The nervous system tends to produce the feeling of readiness after movement begins, not before it.
Action is far more often the cause of confidence than its consequence. Your brain updates itself through evidence, not through reassurance, and you cannot give it evidence while standing still. Wait for the fear to lift before you move and you may be waiting a long time. Start while it is still there, even for two minutes, and you have handed the system the only thing that actually changes its mind.
What you fear is rarely the task. It is standing still long enough to keep imagining it.
